Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update on Marc Guehi’s future at Crystal Palace, confirming that Liverpool are still keeping a close eye on the defender’s situation.
Guehi has been one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League over the past few years, shining for both Crystal Palace and the England national team.
The 25-year-old entered the final year of his contract last summer, and a move to a bigger club seemed inevitable, with Liverpool pushing hard to secure his signature before the deadline.
The Reds reportedly reached an agreement to sign him for around £35 million on deadline day, but the deal fell through when Palace were unable to secure a replacement in time.
As a result, Guehi has now become one of the most valuable players who could walk away as a free agent in 2026, attracting serious interest from across Europe.
Guehi Set to Leave Crystal Palace Next Year
Palace boss Oliver Glasner has already confirmed that Guehi will leave Selhurst Park next year after rejecting a new contract offer from the club.
“I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year,” Glasner revealed last week. “The club wanted him to stay, they offered him a new deal, but he said no, he wants to make something different — and that’s normal.”
The Austrian coach also made it clear that discussions are ongoing within the club about how to handle his exit and plan for life after their star defender departs.
Guehi’s decision to move on comes as no surprise given the level of interest from Europe’s biggest clubs, with Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich all tracking him closely.
Liverpool Remain Attentive Amid European Competition
According to Fabrizio Romano, Guehi has yet to decide his next move, but the most likely scenario is that he leaves Palace on a free transfer in 2026.
Romano added that Liverpool “remain attentive and keen on the England international,” but other top European clubs have also made initial enquiries.
Reports from Spain suggest that Real Madrid are preparing an offer worth around €30–35 million (£30 million) for January, though Romano insists there are “no negotiations taking place now.”
He explained that a free transfer remains the “most likely outcome” after the failed deadline-day move to Anfield, despite medicals being completed and full agreements reached between all parties.
Romano further confirmed that Liverpool still view Guehi as part of their long-term plans and have him on their shortlist for 2026, but nothing is signed or guaranteed.
