Liverpool praised by Schmeichel for landing player he ranks among the best in the world

Liverpool fans know Schmeichel’s views usually come with a hint of United rivalry

Peter Schmeichel has not always been the biggest admirer of Liverpool, but in recent years he has softened his stance and shown plenty of respect for what the Reds have built. From their transfer business to their style of play, the former goalkeeper has been openly impressed.

Last season was the perfect example of that blend working. Arne Slot’s men stormed to the Premier League title with weeks to spare, showing dominance from start to finish in a way that made even their biggest rivals stand back and applaud.

This summer, Liverpool have only strengthened that position. The 2025-26 window has been spectacular, with more than £400 million spent on new arrivals, and Schmeichel believes it might have tipped the balance even further in their favour.

Praise for Mamardashvili

Speaking before the Reds beat Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday, Schmeichel highlighted Giorgi Mamardashvili as the standout. While most fans were raving about the additions of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, the Danish legend was looking at the other end of the pitch.

“Arne Slot’s trying to win every game. That’s how you win the Premier League. You have to back it up with quality,” he said. “When I look at the Liverpool squad, there is quality everywhere. Mamardashvili is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he’s the back-up. That tells a story.”

The fact that Liverpool can call on a world-class shot-stopper behind Alisson Becker says everything about the depth they have built. For a team that wants to compete on multiple fronts, it could prove vital in the months ahead.

Title defence expectations

Going into the new campaign, there were still some doubts over whether Slot could repeat last season’s success. Liverpool lost key games late in the 2024-25 campaign, and critics suggested teams had figured out their approach.

But after a perfect start and a summer of bold signings, those doubts already look misplaced. The squad has been refreshed with quality in every area, and the competition for places is as fierce as it has been in years.

Players such as Wirtz and Isak will take much of the spotlight, but what really stands out is how Slot has built balance across the team. Every department looks ready to handle the demands of a long season, both at home and in Europe.

Schmeichel summed it up perfectly: Liverpool have more than enough quality to win the Premier League again. Anything less than a serious title charge would feel like underachievement.

At the same time, there’s a hunger to go further in the Champions League. Slot and his players know they need to make a statement in Europe, proving they are not just England’s best but one of the true heavyweights of world football.

For fans, the excitement is clear. With the mix of big-money stars, proven leaders and rising talents, this squad looks built for another huge campaign.

And as Schmeichel pointed out, when your back-up goalkeeper is already considered one of the world’s best, it’s hard not to feel confident about what lies ahead.

Liverpool are ready to defend their crown, and anything less than lifting at least one major trophy this season would be viewed as failure.
