According to Craig Hope on YouTube, Isak was left absolutely furious by how Newcastle handled his contract last year.
Contract Drama Sparked Isak’s Anger
Hope reveals that when Paul Mitchell arrived as Newcastle’s sporting director, he instantly shut down talks of a new deal for Isak.
Mitchell questioned why the striker, already among the club’s top earners, should be offered improved terms with four years still left on his deal.
> “He said, ‘No, we can’t afford to pay you that,’” said Hope. “That’s a business decision, sure — but the human side? Isak was furious.”
The fallout reportedly still lingers, with the striker’s camp feeling he was owed a reward for his top performances.
Internal Tension and a Botched Approach
Paul Mitchell’s arrival also caused tension beyond just the contract saga. His early comments rubbed several figures inside the club the wrong way.
> “It was more about delivery,” Hope explained. “What he said made sense on paper, but he got off on the wrong foot with people — including Isak.”
To make matters worse, Newcastle CEO Darren Eales promised in March that Isak’s deal would be revisited after the season — but that never happened.
Hope believes Isak had already lost interest by then, feeling let down and overlooked by the club hierarchy.

That might sound like a lot, but top-level strikers in Europe earn far more — some close to three times his current wages
