As we edge closer to August, Liverpool’s summer business is far from over. While much of the focus has been on incoming transfers, there’s now growing attention on the outgoings — and they’re likely coming fast.
Reports suggest the Reds are close to sealing a deal for Hugo Ekitike, which would push Arne Slot’s non-homegrown quota to 19. With the Premier League allowing only 17 in the squad, departures are inevitable.
But it’s not just the senior foreign players who are at risk — some homegrown talents, both from the first team and academy, are also heading into uncertain territory.
Academy Futures in Doubt – Some Offers, Some Silence
Back in June, Liverpool released their academy retained list, highlighting several youngsters offered new contracts. But there was one key detail missing — no official word on who accepted.
Now, three weeks later, pre-season is in full swing at all levels. The first team has faced Preston North End, while the U21s recently thrashed Celtic U21s 8-0, with several standout performers.
In that game, Kaide Gordon and Owen Beck both scored twice, while Wellity Lucky impressed from centre-back — involved in two goals and looking sharp. He was among the names offered a contract, and his involvement suggests he’s staying put, at least for now.
Three Absentees Raise Questions
However, three names were nowhere to be seen:
Kyle Kelly
Ranel Young
Emmanuel Airoboma
Their absence is notable. Airoboma, just 18, might simply be behind others in the pecking order. But Kelly and Young, both turning 20 this year, should be pushing for involvement.
Ranel Young has even been named on the first-team bench before — so to miss a major U21 fixture is a red flag. Meanwhile, Kelly, a St Kitts and Nevis international, has six senior caps already, yet still didn’t feature.
Given their age and lack of game time, it’s fair to assume all three are now facing uncertain futures at the club.
Next Steps Likely Elsewhere – But Not the End of the Road
The harsh reality of life at a top club like Liverpool is that not every academy talent makes the final cut. But that doesn’t mean it’s over for these players.
Whether they move to lower-league sides or take their careers abroad, history shows that plenty of ex-Liverpool youngsters go on to build solid professional careers elsewhere.
The summer still has twists to come — and for these three, their next chapter may already be in motion.
