The early business has been strong. Florian Wirtz arrived for a record fee, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez bring energy and balance, and the squad is undoubtedly stronger. But no serious fan believes that’s enough just yet. There are still gaps — especially in the final third — and Liverpool need to fill them before the new campaign kicks off.
One player that caught the eye was Malick Fofana. The Belgian forward lit up Ligue 1 last season and looked like a real gem when Lyon were briefly hit with relegation due to financial trouble. At that moment, many believed Liverpool might swoop in for a bargain. But now that Lyon’s relegation has been overturned, the £51m price tag is firmly back in place — and for a player still early in his breakout, that’s a gamble.
It’s not that Fofana lacks talent. Quite the opposite. But Liverpool have been here before — big fees, big expectations, and the need for immediate impact. With Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz both facing uncertain futures, the Reds can’t afford misfires in the market.
Other names remain in the mix. Hugo Ekitike continues to be discussed, Rodrygo’s situation at Real Madrid draws interest, and Anthony Gordon’s name hasn’t gone away either. All three would add quality, but whether any deal can be done is another story.
At this point, it’s less about speculation and more about strategy. If Liverpool want to dominate again — not just in the Premier League but on European nights too — then the next few weeks are crucial. The attack needs fresh legs, fresh ideas, and probably fresh faces. It’s up to Slot and the recruitment team to get those final pieces in place.
