The latest Liverpool transfer news as we take a look at the latest surrounding a move for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz Transfer Edges Closer as Liverpool Continue Summer Spending Spree

After a relatively muted window last summer, Liverpool are moving aggressively in the transfer market under new head coach Arne Slot. With deals for Jeremie Frimpong and Armin Pecsi already sealed, the club is now turning its attention to what could be a record-breaking acquisition — Florian Wirtz.

The 22-year-old German playmaker is one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents, having registered 10 goals and 13 assists in 31 Bundesliga appearances last season. He’s also hit the ground running with the national team, scoring recently for Germany, further stoking speculation about a blockbuster switch to Anfield.

Liverpool, Leverkusen ‘Significantly Closer’ to Agreement

According to BILD, talks between Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen have progressed considerably, with both clubs now “significantly closer” to reaching a full agreement. The Liverpool Echo reports the Reds have submitted a bid of £113 million, though Leverkusen are holding out for closer to £126 million.

A compromise is believed to be in the works, with both sides optimistic of finalising terms soon — a deal that would smash Liverpool’s current transfer record.

Window Timing Could Slightly Delay Official Confirmation

The early transfer window for Club World Cup participants closes at 7pm on Tuesday, meaning any incoming transfers after that point will only become official when the main summer window reopens on June 16.

That said, clubs are free to continue negotiations and even announce deals publicly before formal registration resumes.

Wirtz Medical Expected ‘Next Week’

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Wirtz could undergo his Liverpool medical as early as next week, as the clubs iron out the final stages of the deal. A full agreement is described as “very close,” suggesting Wirtz could be a Red before Euro 2025 kicks off in earnest.

Slot’s Rebuild Gathering Pace

Adding Wirtz to a squad already bolstered by Frimpong and soon-to-be-confirmed Milos Kerkez would represent a clear statement of intent from FSG and Arne Slot. The Dutch coach is shaping a squad built on energy, flexibility, and technical excellence — and Wirtz checks every box.

If the move goes through, it will mark a significant turning point in Liverpool’s rebuild — and potentially the start of a new era at Anfield.
