Diego Simeone has admitted he would not be surprised if Liverpool want to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid
Diego Simeone Responds to Liverpool’s Julian Álvarez Interest: “The Best Have to Want Him”
Liverpool’s search for a new striker this summer has reignited links with Julian Álvarez, and even Diego Simeone admits the growing attention around the Argentine is no surprise.
Álvarez has just wrapped up a stunning first season at Atletico Madrid after joining from Manchester City in an £81.5 million deal last summer. The 25-year-old hit 29 goals in 54 appearances across all competitions, making an immediate impact in La Liga as Atletico secured third place and reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals.
Now, the Premier League is circling again.

Premier League Clubs on Alert
Liverpool, who were previously linked with Álvarez before his move to Spain, are again said to be interested. With Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz both subject to transfer speculation and Arne Slot keen to stamp his identity on the squad, a versatile and prolific forward like Álvarez fits the bill.
Arsenal are also reportedly in the race, while clubs across Europe, including Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, have taken notice.

Simeone: “Everyone Should Want Him”
In a recent interview with La Nación, Atletico manager Diego Simeone didn’t shy away from the growing transfer noise. If anything, he leaned into it—acknowledging Álvarez’s star power while reaffirming his desire to keep him at the Cívitas Metropolitano.
“Julian is 25 years old, he’s an extraordinary player, with hunger, with enthusiasm, with humility, with work, with goals, with hierarchy,” Simeone said.
“How could everyone not want him? Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool… the best have to want him.”
The Argentine boss believes the key to retaining Álvarez lies in one thing: winning.
“It should be a source of pride that everyone wants him. And since he’s ours, we have to take care of him. We have to help him feel happy.
“How will he feel happy? By winning. And to get there, we all have to give 110%—not just for him, but for everyone.”

What Comes Next?
Despite Simeone’s optimism, the battle to keep Álvarez may not be straightforward. He remains under contract, but Atletico’s financial needs and Liverpool’s rebuilding project could change the narrative quickly if the right bid arrives.
Liverpool are expected to make at least one marquee signing in attack this summer. With the deal for Florian Wirtz advancing and other targets such as Viktor Gyökeres and Hugo Ekitike still in the mix, Álvarez may emerge as the Reds’ perfect forward solution—experienced, adaptable, and proven at the highest level.
For now, Simeone is standing firm. But if Liverpool come calling with serious intent, Atletico may have to fight harder than ever to keep one of Europe’s most complete forwards.
