Liverpool have submitted a bid for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz worth in excess of €100m (£84m), journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed
The Premier League champions have reportedly formalised their interest in the ‘elite’ Germany international with an initial proposal and are aiming to complete the deal ‘very soon’.
Wirtz is believed to have informed Leverkusen that his priority is to join Liverpool this summer, alongside teammate Jeremie Frimpong, who is now set to arrive at Anfield in a £30m deal.
A move worth more than €100m for Wirtz could make him Liverpool’s record signing, potentially surpassing the £85m they paid for Darwin Nunez in 2022.
Liverpool are now favourites to sign Wirtz ahead of Bayern Munich, who were reportedly informed that the 22-year-old is leaning towards a summer move to Anfield.
The Germany international, who joined Leverkusen’s youth ranks from Koln in 2020, led the club to their first-ever Bundesliga title last year and was named Player of the Season.
He has made 45 appearances across all competitions in 2024/25, scoring 16 goals and providing 15 assists under Xabi Alonso, who is now close to becoming Real Madrid’s new head coach.
Wirtz is set to lead Leverkusen’s first-team exodus this summer, with both Frimpong and Bayern-bound Jonathan Tah also expected to depart.
Frimpong is believed to have already completed his Anfield medical last week, with formal steps and an official announcement expected to follow.
The Dutch wing-back is set to arrive on Merseyside as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, while Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has been identified as a target at left-back.
The Hungary international has reached an agreement with the Reds over personal terms, and Liverpool are expected to make further progress on a deal with Bournemouth this week.
