Liverpool talent Kaide Gordon is unlikely to play again this season, his current manager has explained, after enduring a frustrating campaign out on loan with two different clubs in the Championship.
The 20-year-old forward has made only one Championship start in 2024/25, which came for Norwich City back in November. Gordon has managed just 296 minutes across the campaign, switching to Portsmouth in the winter in search of more action.
That hasn’t really come, though, and Gordon has struggled to get meaningful minutes on the field. Now, Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has confirmed his plans for the final couple of games: to focus on those who have a long-term future at the south coast club.
“Kaide and Mark [O’Mahony, who is on loan from Brighton] have taken it really well,” Mousinho told reporters including from The News. “I have tried to be honest with them about what I think they can do better with performances and why they have found themselves out of the squad.
“Some of it is about a bit of luck as well, with it also being crunch time at this time of the season. We’re just going to have to make decisions which we think are going to help the team.”
Portsmouth has confirmed its status as a Championship club and has avoided relegation to the third tier. But Mousinho is understandably prioritizing the future
Gordon arrived at Liverpool from Derby County in February 2021. He has always impressed when he has been given chances but has struggled with injuries and has now had another campaign where he has failed to kick on.
Another loan or even a permanent exit in the summer could be best for his career. With Liverpool having such a strong forward line, with more additions potentially coming in the next few months, chances under Arne Slot will be hard to come by — as Federico Chiesa can attest to.
