Anthony Gordon faces an anxious wait over his FA ban as he could miss clash with Liverpool
Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon looks set to miss their Carabao Cup final against Liverpool. The 24-year-old was sent off during the Magpies’ FA Cup exit and he will now miss the encounter with the Reds as a three-match ban kicks in.

Gordon was one of the players linked with a move away from Newcastle as the Magpies faced the threat of breaching Profit and Sustainability Regulations. It was proposed by chiefs in the North East that they could offload the 24-year-old to Liverpool in exchange for Jarell Quansah, before the prospect of Joe Gomez was mentioned – however, they sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to steer clear top-flight sanctions
After booking their place in the final with a comprehensive win over Arsenal across two legs, Gordon spoke of his excitement to play under the arch in a domestic cup final. However, following Gordon’s dismissal, a lot has been made of Gordon’s affiliation with the Reds following his release aged 11 and his widely reported support.
Family reaction to Liverpool results
During a recent televised episode of Sky panel show A League of Their Own, Gordon revealed that his family are all Liverpool supporters and how there was always an underlying feeling that they were supporting the Reds throughout his career at Everton and now St James’ Park
“I have no family members who support Everton. None, not one. All Liverpool so it was quite strange,” he said. “So I was at Liverpool and they released me at 11 and then Everton signed me.
“As long as they lost it was alright. Like if I ever scored, they were like, ‘if you score great but we still want you to lose’. My family are really, really bitter Liverpool fans.”
Steven Gerrard idolised
Gordon hasn’t shied away from his Liverpool admiration. Speaking last April, the 24-year-old revealed how he idolised Steven Gerrard growing up and lavished praise on the former Reds captain.
Steven Gerrard was my football hero growing up,” he told The Overlap. “Coming from Liverpool, he was like a God in Liverpool, and he was an unbelievable player.”
Mohamed Salah admission
And the England international has been complimentary of fellow attacker Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian has turned out another formidable season for the Reds as he leads the race for the golden boot and has set the pace in the assists chart too
Gordon admitted in an interview with TNT Sports that he is ‘probably the best player in the world’.
“I watch Salah a lot,” he said. “Numbers-wise, the positions he takes up, the runs in behind — he’s unbelievable. He’s probably the best player in the world for me because he has so much impact on the game.”
Anfield admiration
During the European Championships, Gordon was fiercely touted to help make a positive impact in Gareth Southgate’s England team. However, his playing time was limited for the Three Lions.
While the tournament was played, Gordon featured on social media doing quickfire questions with broadcasters and sponsors. In one clip, he described Anfield as one of the best atmosphere’s in the country.
He revealed: “Other than St. James’ Park, it’s Anfield by far. I think because I’m from the city, it’s probably like I grew up watching it. But I just think before the game when they sing You’ll Never Walk Alone, it’s top, top level
